Gumby - Moon Trip-Happy 70th!

Two Years later and virtually the anniversity of the earlier mid-late 60s shorts

 Well! It's been a few years..anyhoo, welcome to 2023 and 2024. New dog for me, new weird fantasy like Univ.  M3Gan, Disney/Pixar's INSIDE OUT 2, And a new CLOKEY post!

Everyone knows the timeline of the earlier, dot eyes, 60s Gumby era, i.e.,post-1950s, around 9-12 years old. But exactly WHEN did the flat, Mickey Mouse eyed version,appear?

I.E.,after 1957's "THE ZOOPS" & "EV EN STEVENS." BTW with this REGULAR posts on ALL of my blogs will appear.. But what about later? It seems 1964 was when SCROOGE LOOSE and RAIN FOR ROO (with King Ott and Cadwaddidur(sp?)) appeared.with the nasty Blockheads taking a siesta, then l;ater, possibly with A HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE given the animation behind open titles,a into device held over from HIDDEN VALLEY,LAWN PARTY and some others, some time in 1964, the newer "boomer generationss's "(yours truly included!) got all these later 1960s Gumby's,with Gumby,me, then Prickle,Goo, and Prof.Kapp from AHRH with the return of the nasty Blockheads around then, then the one with the "bubblegum" song mis-quoted in my blog title with the checkerboard open (song written by Pete Kleinow, co-writer/co-director and theme musicv and the novelty(?) latin classic rock band Flying Burrito Brothers).

From around 1965-66 (MISSILE BIRDS','1966' copyright date is exclusive to it;,there are "non-dated", and the numerous 1967 copyright ones, led the way to the remainder of them (till those bland 1980s ones.We don't talk about these..:-))

Many of the restorations actually do a helluva really good job with actual post-1950s copyright..the 1956 (c) was often put on too many, like Peanuts merch getting the character debuts (1950 for Charlie Brown,etc.though Snoopy, though dating to 1950 as well, gets 1958). Likewise the way that many Hanna-Barbera episodes of their earlier 60s prime times getting eventually identical credits no matter what.

Apparently, Prickle, Goo and those others with them began in the mid-60s.

A return to this page with some more stock cue identification!!

 Two years after I last visited, some major things happened..largely, we moved from Whittier cal. to a real..wait for it..HORSE town..Norco,Cali.Sadly my little dog died,and such...but anyway Yowp on Yowp (JG Bennie, also of Tralfaz fame, Vancouver BC) has gotten hold of information about a few cues..heard on Clokey and Hanna-Barbera Prods.shows.

A number of Jack Shaindlin's, as well as Raoul Krausshar and Winston Sharples cues, had been written specifically, as a lot know, for various proeducitons. But Jack's cues,nlike the others, date back to the forgotten SHORTY THE CHIMP live theatrical series which was, about..uh, a chimp.

First information on a few that are Jack Shaindlin cues. HOW NOT TO TRAP LIONS, after the opening title, uses Jack's LAF 72-3 for the campy sad lion music, just like Hanna-Barbera had used it..not on Clokey to my knowledge but n Hanna-Barbera shows a lot is another Shaindlin cue, the chase LAF 1-2. It's in Augie and Daddy Doggie's MARS LITTLE PRECIOUS, basically a Doggie Daddy short with DD babysitting Augie's little friend Boinga Boinga, a martian who runs outn at one point,. and LAF-1-2. plays. A circus march piece appears in Pixie and Dixie (as LAF-1-18 and elsewhere as LAF 6-16) .

That happy Western cue as Pokey in cameo stands in a higher place in Gumby's dream in 1958's "THE GGS AND TRIXIE" and its 1962 edit "EDD TROUBLE", just happens to be a Sam Fox cue (also in Huckleberry Hound and Quick Draw MCGraw), SF-11 SUSANNA HOEDOWN, by one Jacob Louis Detur. So THAT's another composer identified. 😂

A few includi2ng the first being on a few DAVEY AND GOLIATH's..one DOWN ON THE FARM anhim go run away to a circus, is a WAH WAH creepy cue used with LAF-72-3 above in Huckleberry Hound's 1961 NUTTS OVER MUTTS, It's Raoul Kraushaar (Omar)'s 7-MR-177. Another that appears in Hanna-Barbera and Clampett (Snowball)'s classic 1960s BEANY cartoon sometimes if 8-MR-777.

Here's some Winston Sharples (Scroll) pieces ID''d..as in Felix the Cat, all from late 50s-60s.

King Features Syndicate Television's first Paramount Cartoon Popeye, HITS AND MISSILES, originated the pieces that are in FtC as far back as 1959(?)'s VENUS AND THE MASTER CYLINDER in the middle..the swooping chase music (almost like Raymond Scott's POWERHOUSE!), and the weird da-DA-DA-DAda...and the DaDAda Felix chase that ended up with a weird stunned effect...

A cute little bounce cue was in the Modern Madcap 1960, with some very inventive animation, BOUNCING BENNY. It's used in PEP PILL and BIG BROWNIE with Felix, Poindexter, and the Professor (and the second introducing Big Brownie and Rancher Bart.)

 At least, with the nasty virus, I won't have to wear a mask here...This is the near 65th anniverxary of MY GUmby, which ended nearly 50 years ago (please, don't consider that Minga/Dinali stuff from later the same, LOL). Will post soon, anyway, another blog of another classic, with the first major cartoon star, and with as much stock cues (Seeger-Sharples's SCROLL library)..FELIX THE CAT: THE TRANS-LUX years.

I've been reading TVTROPES.org, that famous site of plot devices, cliches, and crazy real life stuff. A change to this is, I'm gonna start adding tropes for these starting after I write this..for each.and I haven't done all the Gumby (pre-1980s) episodes (I only go up to the late 60s).

Gumby and Pokey's new studiomates, Davey, Sally, Goliath and the Hansons

When Art Clokey enjoyed some years of success with GUMBY and me, he came up with the new DAVY AND GOLIATH series in 1959, in association with The Lutheran Church. This had Davey (Dkick Beals, whpo'd soon guest on Gumby) and Hal Smith (GOliath). Davey was a kid, and Goliayth, his wise but GOOFY sounding dog.."Oh, DAVEY"..it used tons of CInemusic and Capitol stock music piec,es a lot of 'em different than the Gumby ones..Davey and Goliaht would appear a few times like on one of the attempted Pokey solo spinoffs, 1962's SANTA WITCH, and also was with both the boys in that 1961's STRANGE PLANETS

Sorry for being dormant on this but for the 65th anniversary of pilot, "Gumbasia", 1953, here's the pilot itself---and NO re - sound - tracking as with the show itself!



This one was made in 1953 with backing by a Fox executive, which thus makes it kind of wierd that 20th.Century Fox never took up the Gumby series distribution (and everything to the video distributions..of course we are glad that the rights for everything within it Clokey and company's.)

RIP, JOE CLOKEY

It grieves me to report that another member of the Gumby family, Art Clokey's son Joe, has passed away. I don't know of the causes, but apparent his widow Ruth who cowrote the recent GUMBY IMAGINED book, will take over the empire. Art himself died back in 2010 (1921-2010).

New Book Out

In case you haven't heard, (Art's son) Joe Clokey (and sister/) Ruth(?) Rock Clokey have a new book out, supposed to be very in-depth, "Gumby Imagined". It's on Amazon, but I haven't gotten enough previews past the opening to see if it has my, and the others's adventures in=depth in the 50s and 60s (it has the IMHO rotten 1980s show on cover..).It'd be great to see the complete cast voices for the original two decades and (with ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE!) original broadcast dates, even stock music cues..

Happy New year, and back to, finally, a new reivew (rhymes...) Once upon a time Disney-Lantz director Jack Kinney directed a very funny Goofy cartoon,
"Motor Mania". (1950)..17 years later, Art Clokey codirected a likewise titled Gumby short with some of humor but more a chase cartoon.

It shows Gumby
and a (later in the short) bitter pony pal Pokey,too.

Pokey is usually the cynical one, but he and Gumby have to use their ususal teamwork against a racer whom they're planning now to race against:
Reggie Van snoot, a teenage, rich, racer with the voice of the Soda Jerk from "Shady Lemonade" & "Dragon Daffy", as heard in "Shady Leminade"
(probaly most likely Clokey himself).

Midway thru the episode, Gumby's racer breaks down (flashbacks of "The Racing Game/Gumby Racer", 1957, anyone? :-)) and Gumby (get ready for another
flashback to that one) improvises..not merging with Pokey but USING him with hm on wheels and Gumby on top.

Norma MacMillan did Pokey's voice actually very successfully, like in the (already reviewed here) "Mystic Magic" and seems to be the voice here as well.

Ignore the 1956 copyright, with all due respect to the owner. This came out in 1967. This is oen of those attempts to get me, Pokey in a spinoff. Goo has a freaking crush on me. She appears everywhere I go. Like Tex Avery's Droopy.Like very recently Emma Stone in "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past' 2009(in front of poor Matthew McConneaughy) (as Droopy himself would say..I do this all through the picture. Now they're in the high school stage more like the 1980s version, but it's the original with the original soundtrack.

Happy new year, and 60 anniversary of Gumby: Star of his own TV show!

Happy new year yearm and now..Pinky Lee and Scotty McKee, may have been forgotten, but on Howdy Doody show, in 1956 they hosted that show where Gumby stared 60 years and some months ago-fall 1956, with the "Gumby going to the moon adventures". In 1957, by then Gumby had gone through changes..besides the series almost right from the start establishing the man cast, includuing Pokey..me, the Horse SC,  and now had gotten his own show with above mentioned Lee and McKee (yeah, a rhyme...but in order) in succession hosting..these were live action and oriignal long form, serialized, GUmby adventures that we all know in their shorter approach.. YouTube had the one with Mr.Stuff, aka the "In the Dough" storyline, with the "Dennis the Menace" music theme having bene used here in its original familiar vide version, as used in the 1958 Road Runner/Coyote show "Hook, Line & Stinker"..The In the Dough flm is otherwise with the same background music. Then we can therefore imagine exactly how Gumby's gummy adventures and Pokey' horseplay was presented.

The date of the premiere,(1957), and studio (Gumby guest voice and Davey voice for Davey and Goliath) voice regular Richard Beals birth date, with 1957 being his 30th, were coincidentally both the same, March 16. No, Mr.Beals himself didn't play the character, though you can find out by checking all of the obvious relative links on the archives.

Gumby's first show would debut therefore, though not quite the anniversary, but just forthcoming, Cheers to the 60th debut as a standalone (post-Howdy Doody) star for Gumby, and the next several rebootsd thru the 1960s and beyond (though the post 1968-69 ones are shark jumpers for me.Incredible, Art kept Davey and Goliath going in its original series. D&G premiered in 1959 right when Mr.Clockey was first relaunching GUmby, unless still doing work on the original..
